Many people with disabilities use Medicaid to get life-saving health care and support. Medicaid helps pay for doctor visits, medicine, in-home helpers, and other services people need to live safely in their homes and communities.
But right now, Congress is talking about cutting how much money goes to Medicaid.
If these cuts happen, people could:
Lose the health care they need.
Wait even longer for help at home.
Be forced to live in nursing homes or institutions.
Have to pay more money out-of-pocket—money many people don’t have.
This is a very serious problem.
Why Is This Happening?
Congress is working on a new Budget Resolution. This is a plan for how the U.S. government will spend money.
Right now, there is a second bill called Budget Reconciliation that includes big cuts to Medicaid. Some people in Congress want even more cuts. These cuts would hurt people with disabilities across the country.
We need to act fast. The Senate will vote soon.
What Happens If Medicaid Is Cut?
If Medicaid is cut, each state will have to make hard choices. Some states will cut services. That means fewer people will get help, and people who still get help might get less.
One of the first programs states cut is called Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS). These are the supports that help people live at home instead of in institutions.
Without HCBS:
People may lose job coaches and in-home aides.
People could be forced to leave their homes and live in places they don’t want to be.
People may have to wait even longer for help—or never get it at all.
We cannot let that happen. The time to act is NOW.
You Can Help Stop These Cuts
You have a voice. The bill has passed in the House and is heading to the Senate so it’s important to call your senators and tell them:
Do not vote for any bill that cuts Medicaid.
