Learning Through Service: Our Intern's Reflection on Her Experience at The Transition Academy
At The Transition Academy, we believe in creating real-world learning experiences for the students we serve. However, this year, we also had an intern with us for the entire school year, as she gained valuable real-world experience. Savannah Friedebach, from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), brought compassion, insight, and dedication to our work with youth as they navigated the transition from high school to adulthood.
In her own words, this internship was unlike anything she expected.
"I learned a lot from being at The Transition Academy. It’s been a really unique experience—getting to see all sides of a relatively new nonprofit.”
During her time with us, she built deep relationships with students and helped guide them through career exploration, soft skills development, and moments of emotional growth. As a future mental health professional, she saw how powerful it can be to support the whole student—not just academically, but personally and professionally.
"I’ve developed really deep connections with the students—supporting them emotionally and preparing them for careers. That’s something I wouldn’t have gotten in a clinical setting."
She also worked side-by-side with our diverse team of educators, social workers, and advocates, soaking in wisdom from people with decades of experience in education and disability services. This collaborative environment, grounded in trust and respect, helped shape her professional outlook.
“I love our team. I’ve learned so much from everyone here. I’m definitely leaving a better professional.”
We’re proud of the learning journey Savannah took with us, and we’re excited to continue creating opportunities where emerging professionals can discover what it truly means to serve young people with disabilities.
Our interns don’t just observe—they participate. They contribute. They grow.
That’s real-world learning in action.
